WISLI Student Conference Call for Papers

The annual WISLI Student Conference provides an opportunity for students at WISLI institutes and UW-Madison to present original research on various disciplines across Southeast Asia, South Asia, Central Eurasia, and the Middle East, as well as transnational studies. Abstract submissions are organized into thematic panels of two to four papers, with a moderated Q+A session following the presentations.

Past panels included presentations on thematic topics such as: economics, politics, literature, linguistics, second language acquisition, land development and economy, inter-cultural collaboration, identity, health, colonialism, religion studies, military, film studies, and more!

Fulbright Week at UW-Madison

We are hosting our first ever Fulbright Week at UW-Madison the week of March 4-8, 2024. There will be a mix of in-person and virtual events where interested students, alumni, faculty, and staff can learn more about the many Fulbright and Fulbright-Hays programs available as well as connect with current Fulbrighters, past recipients, and Fulbright and commission staff.

Information session for UW-Madison faculty, staff, and those exploring post-doc options interested in learning about the Fulbright (US) Scholar Program (FSP). Join IIE’s FSP program officer Keegan Scott, the UW-Madison’s Scholar Liaison, Mark Lilleleht, and recent UW-Madison FSP awardees – Kata Beilin (Mexico 2022) and Michel Wattiaux (Canada 2022) – to explore opportunities to teach, conduct research, and carry out professional projects in more than 135 countries. Applicants for a FUSP must be a US citizen at the time of application. Food and drink will be provided! Applicants for a FUSP must be a US citizen at the time of application. Join us on Thursday morning to meet staff from Fulbright commissions and posts representing Austria, Belgium/Luxembourg/EU, Estonia, and Taiwan to learn about the opportunities available to US students, faculty, staff, and alumni through the various Fulbright & Fulbright-Hays programs as well as get insight into how commissions work in-country and with awardees. Each country will present an overview of awards and the awarding process; there will be time reserved for Q&As as well.
Those interested in the broad range of opportunities available through both the Fulbright US Student Program and the Fulbright Scholar Program are encouraged to attend – and should provide an unparalleled insight into how Fulbright works in countries around the world, regardless of which particular award you will be pursuing!

Application workshop for those with an active 2024 Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad application. This is an opportunity for DDRA applicants to work with peers and the UW-Madison’s Fulbright Coordinator to have questions answered and get feedback on their application, discuss and brainstorm around particular components, and provide a supportive environment to strengthen their project.

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State with funding provided by the U.S. Government. Spring Professional Development Workshop on AI & Language

Spring PD Workshop: Artificial Intelligence (AI) & Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT)

The Spring 2024 professional development workshop for the LCTL and Indigenous Languages Partnership will cover AI & TBLT. The presenters are Frederick J Poole, Rajiv Ranjan, and Charlene Polio.

In this workshop, LCTL teachers will learn about the principles and benefits of task-based language teaching, and how it can enhance students’ communicative competence. Additionally, LCTL teachers will be introduced to generative AI tools, to be applied within the TBLT framework, that can help them quickly and easily create customized materials and lesson plans tailored to their specific language and proficiency levels.

Participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the principles and benefits of task-based language teaching (TBLT) for language instruction.
  2. Utilize generative AI tools to design and develop customized TBLT materials and lessons.
  3. Build a collaborative website using AI tools as a repository for sharing TBLT materials and resources.
  4. Develop a plan for continued collaboration and expertise sharing among language teachers after the workshop.

Workshop Details

  • Where: The workshop will take place in person at Michigan State University on Monday, May 13 and Tuesday, May 14, 2024.
  • Who can apply: Instructors of LCTLs in the United States.
    • Preference will be given to first-time attendees and instructors in the Big Ten Academic Alliance.
    • Graduate students who teach a LCTL may apply, but must address their plans to continue teaching their language in their application materials.
  • Cost: Workshop costs are generously covered by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. In addition, attendees are allocated up to $700 reimbursement of travel and lodging expenses (but depending on overall costs of all attendees, the grant may be able to reimburse more travel/lodging costs).
    • There will be an option to participate in a research project (survey and interviews) for an additional stipend.

Applications are due by January 31, 2024, and selected applicants should anticipate receiving an email regarding their status by February 14th.

WISLI Open House

On Wednesday, January 24 from 3-4 p.m., as part of the Wisconsin Winter Welcome events, the Wisconsin Intensive Summer Language Institutes (WISLI) will be hosting an Open House for prospective students interested in learning more about the summer intensive language program opportunities offered at WISLI and related Language Program Office programs.
